This project involves constructing a basement using traditional underpinning techniques to strengthen existing foundations and support new structural elements. The adjacent structures’ foundations were stabilised to ensure safety during excavation. Traditional underpinning involved excavating below existing foundations and pouring new concrete footings to transfer loads to more stable soil.
The basement slab was designed as an inverted raft, acting like a continuous beam to distribute loads and resist groundwater pressures, providing a watertight base. Steel box frames were added for lateral stability, acting as shear walls to resist soil pressure and seismic activity.
Effective waterproofing measures, including drainage systems and membrane barriers, were implemented to manage water.
Close coordination with building occupants and construction teams was essential to minimise disruptions and ensure safety during the project
