In this basement construction project, we employed a comprehensive underpinning approach to enhance the stability of the existing structure during excavation. This method ensures that the integrity of the building remains intact while allowing for essential renovations. To maximise natural light within the basement, we introduced new light wells at both the front and rear of the property. These light wells not only illuminate the space but also improve the overall ambiance. A striking glass bridge spans these light wells, maintaining seamless connectivity at ground level and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the property. Given the challenges posed by the site's high water table, a robust waterproofing strategy was paramount. We designed the basement slab as an inverted raft foundation to effectively counteract substantial upward hydraulic pressures. This innovative raft system works in tandem with a high-performance waterproof membrane to prevent water ingress, ensuring a dry and usable space. Additionally, we integrated reinforced concrete box frames into the design. These frames play a crucial role in distributing hydraulic uplift forces throughout the structure while providing vital lateral stability.
This design consideration is essential for maintaining structural integrity along shared party walls with adjoining buildings, thereby reducing the risk of settlement or lateral movement. Through these engineered solutions, we successfully created a structurally sound and watertight basement that meets the environmental challenges of the site and supports the loads imposed by the building above. Our commitment to excellence in structural engineering ensures a safe and sustainable foundation for future use.
