Transforming a dated 1970s detached house into a modern architectural marvel, the project skilfully utilised permitted development rights to redefine design boundaries while maintaining compliance. The original traditional load-bearing structure was replaced with a new lightweight steel frame, providing flexibility for the modern layout. Incorporating timber floor systems, the design ensured the structure remained both efficient and lightweight. Adequate existing structural elements were retained and integrated into the new design, optimising cost and sustainability. Large steel box frames, strategically placed, created expansive, open-plan living spaces without the need for intrusive columns or load-bearing walls. The result is a contemporary, structurally sound home, blending modern design with efficient engineering, while maximising the use of existing resources.
